The
Texas Faith Network is pleased to announce the Fundamentalism Education Project. This public education initiative brings scholars and clergy from across the country together to explore the truths and myths of religious fundamentalism as it has emerged in Christianity, Judaism and Islam.

Now more than ever, people of faith seek to understand how and why faith traditions are being misconstrued and misused by fundamentalists who distort the inclusive values of the Christian, Jewish, and Islamic faiths. The Texas Faith Network is organizing the Fundamentalism Education Project to provide expansive resources for clergy, laity, activists, and community leaders.

To launch this initiative, the
Texas Faith Network will host a conference entitled "Fundamentalism’s Threat to Democracy: Christians, Jews and Muslims Respond," in Houston on August 19, 2002 at South Main Baptist Church (4100 Main St., at Richmond Ave.)

Karen Armstrong, award-winning author of The Battle for God and one of the premiere, contemporary voices on religious fundamentalism, will deliver the keynote lecture. The conference will include panels of national and local experts who will discuss an array of historical and contemporary topics related to fundamentalism's presence across the different faith traditions. There will also be opportunities to voice your own experiences and opinions in focus groups and workshops.

The Fundamentalism Education Project will continue after this conference with public education efforts, including an adult study curriculum, an extensive bibliography, editorial board visits, and special resources for clergy.
